Mizzou hires USC D-line coach Chris Wilson for same position on Barry Odom’s new staff

The retooling Missouri football program added another piece to its stable of assistants under head coach Barry Odom on Monday, announcing the hire of Chris Wilson as defensive line coach.

Wilson has coached the position for 19 years, with stops at such programs as Colorado, Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Georgia and USC.

“Chris Wilson is a great fit for our staff,” Odom said in a statement. “I’ve known of him and thought highly of him for a number of years.”

Wilson, 46, spent the past two seasons with the Trojans, where he guided star defensive end Leonard Williams to first-team All-American honors in 2014. Williams was the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft this year. Wilson spent 2013 as defensive line coach at Georgia.

Details of Wilson’s contract have not yet been released.

“I’m definitely excited about the opportunity to be at such a great institution and program as Mizzou and also to be back in the SEC,” Wilson said in a statement. “I’ve seen Mizzou in person a lot, both as a coach and a player, and I’ve always enjoyed the energy of their fan base. You can tell the football program is important to the state and their culture.

“What they’ve been able to accomplish as a program in their short time in the league, being in two championship games, is really impressive.”

Before beginning his college coaching career, Wilson had NFL minority internships with the Dallas Cowboys (1995), Arizona Cardinals (1997) and Miami Dolphins (1998).

A native of Richardson, Texas, Wilson played for years at Oklahoma and was a 12th-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in 1992.
