Missouri expected to schedule football game at Arrowhead Stadium, possibly in 2015

The Missouri Tigers have played several memorable football games in Arrowhead Stadium, including the 2011 Border Showdown game against Kansas, when the Tigers beat the Jayhawks and captured the trophy drum. A news conference is scheduled Thursday, and Missouri is expected to announce a future football game at Arrowhead, possibly next season.

The Kansas City Chiefs have scheduled a news conference Thursday “for a major college football announcement at Arrowhead Stadium,” according to news release sent Wednesday night.

The same release was forwarded to the media by the University of Missouri athletic department, and it is thought the Tigers will announce a game at Arrowhead Stadium, perhaps for next season.

Missouri 2015 schedule starts with home nonconference games against Southeast Missouri State and Connecticut sandwiched around a trip to Arkansas State.

The Tigers’ conference schedule also has been set, but coach Gary Pinkel’s team has an open date Nov. 14 for its fourth and final nonconference game.

Missouri officials declined to comment about Thursday’s announcement or possible opponents, but BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall earlier this season mentioned MU as a possible 2015 foe.

When Mendenhall was asked about BYU’s strength of schedule on his weekly radio show Oct. 1, the Tigers came up twice. He talked about the Cougars’ 2015 schedule — which includes games at Nebraska (Sept. 5), UCLA (Sept. 19) and Michigan (Sept. 26) — and also threw in “at Missouri” after those other three games.

Mendenhall went on to say most Power Five conference teams are skittish about playing a home-and-home with BYU and push for a two-for-one arrangement or try to push the game in Provo, Utah, well into the future — like 2030, he joked.

Mendenhall said he counters by attempting to negotiate home-and-home series with a third neutral-site game in the opposing team’s home state and specifically used Missouri and a game at Arrowhead as an example.

When pressed by the “BYU Football with Bronco Mendenhall” co-hosts, Mendenhall backtracked and wouldn’t confirm a game with Missouri at that time.

“It could be,” Mendenhall said. “That’s not for me to say, because it hasn’t been announced yet.”
