Missouri’s Kentrell Brothers chosen as SEC defensive player of the week
Missouri senior linebacker Kentrell Brothers did more than ice a 27-20 victory at Arkansas State with his second interception in the closing minutes.
Brothers also locked down Southeastern Conference defensive player of the week honors Monday thanks, in part, to the game-clinching play, which capped a second consecutive 16-tackle performance and included a pair of fourth-quarter picks.
It is the second career weekly conference award for Brothers, who leads the Football Bowl Subdivision with 32 tackles this season, and the first for the Tigers since Markus Golden won for his performance at Tennessee last November. Brothers also won SEC defensive player of the week honors after Missouri’s upset at Georgia in October 2013.
Missouri’s conference opener gets evening start
The SEC announced that No. 22 Missouri at Kentucky on Sept. 26 will be an evening game, but the details remain unsettled.
The Tigers’ SEC opener will either be at 6 p.m. on ESPN or ESPN2 or at 6:30 p.m. on the SEC Network depending on the outcome of this weekend’s games. Texas A&M at Arkansas and Mississippi State at Auburn also are being considered for those time slots.
Carly Kan earns volleyball honor
Missouri junior outside hitter Carly Kan was chosen Monday as the SEC volleyball player of the week after recording 72 kills with a .299 hitting percentage en route to MVP honors at the Appalachian State Invitational.
She set a career high with 26 kills in wins against the host Mountaineers and Liberty University.
