Missouri School of Journalism graduate Steve Weinman was hired as Wake Forest’s men’s and women’s basketball general manager and senior associate athletic director for analytics, the school announced Thursday.
“Steve brings to Wake Forest a powerful blend of NBA experience, strategic insight and a collaborative spirit,” Wake Forest vice president and athletic director John Currie said in a news release. “His work will not only help drive competitive excellence for all our programs, with a large focus on basketball, but will also help establish a first-of-its-kind partnership between athletics and our world-class School of Business.”
Weinman attended Mizzou from 2006-10 and earned his bachelor’s degree in convergence journalism.
After graduation, Weinman worked as an associate for the NBA, dealing in data services, marketing, events and attractions, before becoming a basketball operations assistant for the then-D-League. He produced analytics reports and statistical modeling for both the NBA and what is now called the G League.
Weinman joins Wake Forest’s staff after spending 13 years with the Chicago Bulls as the assistant general manager (2012-22) and vice president of basketball strategy and analytics (2022-25).
“I was very fortunate to work closely with Steve for five years in Chicago. He was an invaluable resource to myself and our staff as it relates to analytics,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said. “Wake Forest is getting a person that will help take the men’s and women’s basketball on the cutting edge of analytics.”
In Weinman’s role as basketball GM for the Demon Deacons, the news release claims he will work with men’s coach Steve Forbes and women’s coach Megan Gebbia “on roster construction, including recruiting strategy, transfer portal evaluation, resource allocation and planning.
”From the moment I began consulting with Wake Forest this spring, it has been a joy to work with two basketball coaching staffs who have been so welcoming to me and open-minded in how they think about the game, both in terms of roster construction and game strategy,” Weinman said.
Weinman will collaborate with players’ agents as well.
“In today’s collegiate sports landscape, adding someone of Steve’s expertise and experience in talent evaluation and roster management is crucial,” Gebbia said. “Steve’s ability to combine data-driven insights with a deep understanding of the game will be a tremendous asset as we continue to build our program.”
As senior associate AD for analytics, Weinman will “serve as an executive affiliate with the Wake Forest School of Business, building and managing a formal partnership with the shared goal of developing a sports analytics concentration within the master’s in business analytics program,” among other responsibilities.
The hiring of Weinman comes after the Wake Forest men finished last season with a 21-11 overall record and 13-7 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Wake women went 9-20 overall and 2-16 in league play last season.
