Dennis Gates, Mizzou basketball announce 4th transfer addition of the offseason

The Missouri Tigers have officially announced a new addition to Dennis Gates’ squad.

Mizzou basketball announced its fourth signing of the offseason Wednesday in seven-foot center Shawn Phillips Jr.

Phillips, a rising senior, spent his previous two seasons at Arizona State. Last season, Phillips averaged 5.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 31 games (12 starts). He averaged 18 minutes played.

The Dayton, Ohio native was a former three-star recruit out of Dream City Christian High School. He started his collegiate career at LSU in 2022, making 20 appearances for the Tigers and averaging 1.4 points per game.

Now, he makes his return to the SEC with a program that hopes to build on last year’s NCAA Tournament appearance.

“We’re excited to welcome Shawn to Mizzou,” head coach Dennis Gates said in a news release. “Shawn brings valuable experience to our program, having played in three power conferences, including a season in the SEC. He has great size, length and athleticism and has a strong presence in the paint with elite rim protection skills. He has been very efficient during his career on both ends of the court, and we expect him to have a big impact on our success this season.”

As the fourth signing out of the transfer portal, Phillips joins UCLA guard Sebastian Mack, Oklahoma forward Luke Northweather and Loyola Marymount forward Jevon Porter in Columbia.
