Mizzou basketball has its first transfer portal loss. He spent 3 years with the Tigers

Missouri Tigers guard/forward Aidan Shaw announced Tuesday that he’s entering the NCAA transfer portal in search of a new men’s basketball program.

Shaw, who starred at Blue Valley High School before committing to Mizzou, becomes the Tigers’ first loss from a 2024-25 roster that reached the NCAA Tournament before losing to Drake in the first round.

Shaw averaged 9.1 minutes of playing time for MU this year — a sharp drop from his usage (16.3 minutes per game) in 2023-24. His playing time decreased even more dramatically once the Southeastern Conference portion of the 2024-25 schedule arrived.

Shaw typically averaged no more than a minute or two of court time during SEC play this season. His scoring average was 2.6 points per game this year, down from 3.8 in 2024-24.

Shaw made the announcement that he’s leaving Columbia in a statement posted to social media. It read, in part: “I would like to sincerely express my gratitude to the Mizzou staff for the opportunity to play at the University of Missouri. Over the past three years, I have had truly remarkable experiences filled with unforgettable moments.”

After thanking fans, he continued: “Although it is a difficult decision, I believe it is important to prioritize my future. After careful consideration and discussions with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”

Listed at 6-foot-9 and 210 pounds, Shaw was a standout at both Blue Valley and within the MoKan youth hoops program. He chose Missouri over such other suitors as Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa, Oklahoma State and Maryland.

Shaw actually initially committed to Mizzou in 2020 to play for then-head coach Cuonzo Martin. When Martin was fired, Shaw de-committed ... and then re-committed after the hire of new head coach Dennis Gates.

“Coach Gates contacted me as soon as he got his job,” Shaw told The Star after renewing his pledge to MU in 2022. “That’s why I was really convinced he really wanted me here. When a head coach shows interest like that, it’s something players love.”

As a senior at Blue Valley, Shaw averaged 19.7 points and 9.6 rebounds. He shot 45.9% overall and 39.1% from beyond the arc. He was named All-Metro and won the high school slam dunk contest at the Final Four.

Shaw closed out his high school career by winning the DiRenna Award as the top player in the Kansas City area.

And now, with NCAA eligibility remaining, he’s on the hunt for new college basketball program through the transfer portal.

The Star’s Blair Kerkhoff contributed reporting.
