Another honor for Missouri Tigers star & KC native Mark Mitchell, this one from AP
Mizzou men’s basketball junior wing Mark Mitchell was named to The Associated Press All-SEC second team Tuesday. The Kansas City product was voted to the team by 16 reporters who cover the Southeastern Conference.
The honor marks Mitchell’s second in as many days as he was selected to the All-SEC third team Monday by the league’s coaches.
“I think he’s a first-team all-conference caliber guy, there’s no doubt about it” Missouri coach Dennis Gates said Tuesday in a news conference. “He’s such a cerebral and versatile player, but I do know he’s very unselfish.”
The Duke transfer is averaging a team-best 14.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, and was one of 12 players nationally and one of five power-conference players to record at least 400 points, 125 rebounds, 60 assists, 30 steals and 25 blocks in the regular season.
“I truly believe there’s no other system in this country that allows a Mark Mitchell to showcase the things he showcased, especially with the teammates and their skillsets as well,” Gates said. “He’s a humble human being (and a) great basketball player.”
Mississippi State sophomore guard Josh Hubbard, Texas A&M graduate guard Wade Taylor IV, Tennessee senior guard Zakai Zeigler and South Carolina sophomore forward Collin Murray-Boyles were also selected to the All-SEC second team.
The first team featured Florida senior guard Walter Clayton Jr., Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson, Tennessee graduate guard Chaz Lanier, Alabama graduate guard Mark Sears and Auburn senior forward Johni Broome.
Regular-season champion Auburn took home the top postseason awards. Broome was named AP SEC player of the year, and coach Bruce Pearl netted the AP SEC coach of the year award.
Johnson represented the Longhorns, winning the AP SEC newcomer of the year.
