For first time in 15 years, Mizzou is looking for a new women’s basketball coach

Missouri women’s basketball coach Robin Pingeton will step down after this season.

Pingeton, in her 15th season as the Tigers head coach, will leave as the second-winningest coach in program history. Her career record heading into Thursday’s game at Arkansas is 249-216.

“After a lot of reflection, I have decided it’s time for a new voice to lead Mizzou women’s basketball,” Pingeton said in a statement from the university. “This is a decision I arrived at after initiating conversations with (athletic director) Laird Veatch, and I am incredibly grateful for his leadership and support throughout this process.

“I love Columbia, Mizzou and the amazing community that has supported my family and this program for so many years. This is the end of this chapter. I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Pingeton has taken 10 Missouri teams to postseason play, including four straight NCAA Tournament appearances starting in 2016.

Perhaps the biggest victory in Pingeton’s tenure came against No. 1 South Carolina in 2021, the only victory over a top-ranked team in program history.

This season, the Tigers are 13-16 overall and 2-12 in SEC play after finishing 11-19 overall last season.

Pingeton previously served as a head coach at Illinois State and St. Ambrose and is 584-373 in 29 seasons.

The Tigers finish the regular season at home on Sunday against Vanderbilt and open SEC Tournament play next week in Greenville, S.C.
