Montaque Gill-Caesar is leaving Mizzou basketball team
Montaque Gill-Caesar will not return to Missouri’s basketball team next season, coach Kim Anderson announced on Wednesday.
Gill-Caesar averaged 9.1 points and 2.9 rebounds in 26 games last season as a freshman. He averaged 12.6 points in the Tigers’ first 10 games, but a back injury suffered in the Illinois game affected him the rest of the season.
Anderson said Gill-Caesar, a 6-6 wing from Canada who arrived at Mizzou from Huntington Prep in West Virginia as a top 50 recruit, leaves on good terms.
“In an evolving conversation this week, Montaque informed our program of his future plans,” Anderson said in a statement. “He intends to resume his education and playing career at a different institution. We will assist him in every way possible in that transition, pending the completion of his academic obligations he committed to with our staff.”
Gill-Caesar was set to try out for the 19-and-under Canadian national team but his back injury forced him to scrap those plans.
Missouri has now lost two of its top three scorers from last year’s team that finished 9-23. Forward Johnathan Williams III, who led the Tigers with 11.9 points and 7.1 rebounds last season, has announced he’s transferring to Gonzaga.
