Dennis Gates’ latest hire for Mizzou hoops was a Division I head coach for 19 years
Dennis Gates’ Missouri Tigers coaching staff is shaping up to be one of the most experienced in men’s college basketball.
Dickey Nutt, who has spent 19 seasons as a Division I head coach, is the latest addition.
Earlier this week, Missouri announced that Charlton Young had been hired as Gates’ associate head coach. Young previously served as Georgia Southern’s head coach, then spent the next nine seasons at Florida State.
Nutt, 62, and Gates worked together on staffs at Florida State and Cleveland State, where Gates was the head coach. Last year, Nutt was athletic director and head coach at Gaston College, a community college in North Carolina.
He was the head coach at Arkansas State for 13 seasons and Southeast Missouri State for six and owns a 269-295 career record. His 1999 Arkansas State team remains the only one in school history to compete in the NCAA Tournament.
Nutt has two brothers who have been college coaches. Houston Nutt led the football programs at Arkansas, Mississippi and Boise State. Dennis Nutt was the basketball coach at Texas State.
Dickey Nutt started his college coaching career at his alma mater, Oklahoma State, and served on the staff of Leonard Hamilton, who later hired him at Florida State.
