Missouri Tigers miss out on coaching candidate as Florida hires San Francisco’s Todd Golden
The Missouri Tigers have missed out on a potential head coaching target to replace Cuonzo Martin.
San Francisco’s Todd Golden was announced as the head coach of the Florida Gators men’s basketball program on Friday afternoon.
Golden, 36, after three years leading the Dons, is considered a rising star in the college basketball coaching ranks. He has a 57-36 record and his team finished 24-11 this season, losing on Thursday as a No. 10 seed in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 7 seed Murray State, whose head coach Matt McMahon is also expected to be considered for the Mizzou job.
Golden was previously an assistant at San Francisco and also served as an assistant under Bruce Pearl at Auburn. Florida associate athletic director Jay Jacobs was the athletic director at Auburn during Golden’s time there.
The Missouri job has been open for a week now, with very little public chatter or information released. Missouri athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois has previously talked about her preference to keep coaching searches under lock and key.
Francois had a track record of hiring young, up-and-coming coaches in her previous role at UNLV. Former Mizzou basketball star Kim English, now a head coach at George Mason, Cleveland State’s Dennis Gates and McMahon are believed to be some of the school’s remaining targets. Names like Baylor assistant coach Jerome Tang and North Texas head coach Grant McCasland have also been mentioned.
