This week in Mizzou recruiting: Kelly Bryant, Cam’Ron Fletcher, Maliq Carr and more
This week’s recruiting column is a little shorter than most since I have a flight to catch to Florida.
Let’s jump on it.
Bryant visits Missouri
Clemson transfer quarterback Kelly Bryant took an official visit to Missouri last Saturday for the Kentucky game. He told The (Columbia S.C.) State that the visit “checked all the boxes.” He also visited Auburn this week and heads to North Carolina this weekend. He’ll visit Mississippi State next weekend and will have one more visit left if he wants to use it.
I think Missouri has a good chance at Bryant, as the Tigers are one of the non-rebuild situations that he’s looking at. With Barry Odom’s job security currently uncertain, if Bryant wants to come to Missouri, he’ll probably have to make sure the coach recruiting him is going to be there.
Mizzou hosts Nance
Another major visit Missouri football had last Saturday was former Arkansas wideout Jonathan Nance. Nance was a high school teammate of Tigers slot receiver Richaud Floyd and was the Hogs’ leading receiver last year.
With Emanuel Hall trying to avoid a redshirt, Nance could be a big piece to Missouri’s offense next year should he commit. Missouri will return freshman wideout Jalen Knox and likely all three tailbacks, which would be very enticing to a prospect like Bryant. Tight end Albert Okwuegbunam’s potential departure to the NFL is still up in the air. Nance currently doesn’t have any other visits planned and the connection to Floyd should help.
Cam’Ron Fletcher hearing from UCLA
As a 2020 basketball prospect, Cam’Ron Fletcher has the ability to take up to 15 official visits should he want to. It wouldn’t surprise me if he came close to hitting that number. Fletcher, the high school teammate of Mizzou commit Mario McKinney is hearing from schools all over the country. While he’s a major MU priority for 2020, he’s currently planning a visit to Michigan State and had UCLA in to see him this week. Fletcher is a prospect hearing from so many programs, it’s tough to tell which ones he prefers over others.
The Tigers are in good shape and McKinney’s relationship with him could be a factor in his recruitment, but given the amount of attention he’s currently getting, I think he’ll end up putting a lot of his official visits to use.
Carr picks up Ohio State offer
Maliq Carr, a 2020 wideout from Michigan, picked up an offer from Ohio State this week. The son of Mizzou assistant hoops coach Cornell Mann, Carr holds a Mizzou offer in both football and basketball. Carr has talked about playing both sports in college, but that rarely ends up happening for most athletes. His recruitment is interesting to me because Cuonzo Martin is his primary recruiter for basketball while his father is more active in his football recruiting. Mann wants his son to do his own thing in recruiting, which is why he’s making it Martin’s call on offering him and courting him.
Carr would be an excellent addition to either program. He has the size and hands to be a deep threat in college football and has the athleticism to be a solid basketball player as well.
