Drew Lock grew up watching the Chiefs. Here’s what he thinks of Patrick Mahomes
Drew Lock and Patrick Mahomes don’t know each other too well but they have some similarities.
Both quarterbacks play for teams in Missouri, with Lock running the Mizzou Tigers offense and Mahomes leading the Kansas City Chiefs.
Both are around 6-foot-4 and have cannons for arms.
And both had questions about the air-raid offense they ran in college and how it would translate to the pros when they declared early for the NFL Draft.
Lock returned to school this spring, while Mahomes left and was drafted by the Chiefs at No. 10 overall in 2017. Should Lock and Missouri finish the season strong, he could share in a similar fate.
He was asked on Tuesday what he thinks of Mahomes.
“Patrick’s playing his butt off,” said Lock, a Lee’s Summit native. “Being from KC, it’s all Chiefs Kingdom and you love the success that they’re having if you’re a Kansas City fan.”
Lock said he’s neutral when it comes to rooting for NFL teams but is impressed with how Mahomes is utilizing his weapons on offense. He also gave some love to Chiefs center Mitch Morse, a former Missouri standout.
“You’re watching Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins and Kareem Hunt. He’s got some weapons out there with him. His O-line is playing its butt off. Good old Mitch Morse. They’re playing really well right now.”
When discussing Lock’s NFL stock last month, scouts told The Star that any comparisons between the two aren’t fair to Lock, because Mahomes is more accurate with his deep ball than Lock and has an IQ that isn’t comparable to anyone his age. Mahomes also started his NFL career as the best quarterback statistically through seven games, which makes any comparison unrealistic.
