Missouri announces home-and-home football series with Connecticut

Missouri announced Thursday it had finalized a home-and-home football series with Connecticut for 2015 and 2017.

The Tigers will play the Huskies on Sept. 19 next season at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

The return game will be two years later — Sept. 23, 2017 — at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn.

The games will mark the first football meetings between the teams.

Missouri now has three of four nonconference games set for next season, including a home game Sept. 5 against Southeast Missouri and a road contest Sept. 12 at Arkansas State.

“We’re really pleased to be able to reach an agreement to schedule UConn,” MU executive associate athletic director Bryan Maggard, who oversees football scheduling, said in a release. “It’s fun to bring new opponents into Columbia for our fans, and this is a program that’s had a high level of success in the past decade.

“One of the most challenging aspects of conference realignment has involved football scheduling, and reconstructing things after we moved to the SEC. We’re getting really close to having 2015 taken care of and being able to move on to future schedules, so that’s very exciting.”

The Tigers don’t have any nonconference games lined up for the 2016 season, but 2017 now includes the Huskies game and a home game against Purdue, a Big Ten team, in September.

Missouri’s 2018 schedule includes Wyoming at home and Purdue on the road, while 2019 includes the return game at Wyoming and a home contest with Memphis.

The Tigers, who host Indiana at 3 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium, are slated to play at Memphis in 2020.

Beginning in 2016, all Southeastern Conference schools are required to play at least one non-conference game against a team from the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12 or Pac-12 conferences. Connecticut plays in the American Athletic Conference.

The series with Purdue, of the Big Ten, satisfies that requirement for 2017 and 2018, but Missouri must find a major-conference opponent for 2016 as well as 2019 and beyond.
