MU football injury update: Lineman has surgery, several other players will have procedures
Missouri redshirt freshman offensive lineman Paul Adams had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder Monday, a team spokesman said, but he’s not the only player set for a procedure.
Redshirt freshman running back Trevon Walters is scheduled to have the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee repaired Tuesday.
Junior wide receiver Jake Brents and redshirt freshman linebacker Grant Jones also were slated for surgery Tuesday. Both have a torn labrum in their left shoulder.
Redshirt freshman Sam Bailey also needs labrum after injuring his right shoulder in Saturday’s annual Black & Gold Spring Game, but no date has been set for his procedure.
Bailey finished the spring taking second-team reps at left tackle.
Adams, Brents, Jones and Bailey should be ready for Missouri’s fall camp, which begins in August.
Brents, Adams and Jones, the son of MU running backs coach Brian Jones, were working with third team during spring camp.
Adams said on Twitter that the surgery went well and he was grateful for his family’s support.
Surgery went great, glad my family was here to be by my side! Come visit if you have the time today
— Paul Adams (@Paul_Adams74) April 20, 2015Team doctors are targeting September for Walters’ return. He was fourth on the depth chart this spring behind Russell Hansbrough, Ish Witter and Tyler Hunt.
Junior Morgan Steward has been sidelined since Aug. 8 with a hip injury. He had surgery in November to remove debris and the Tigers’ staff hopes he can return in June.
Depth at tailback became a concern in camp after Walters’ injury, but the arrival of junior college transfer Chase Abbington and Winnetonka senior Marquise Doherty in June should help.
Of course, Doherty, who also will play baseball at Missouri, is expected to be selected in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft and could choose to sign a professional baseball contract.
