About Missouri (1-0): Despite the absence of Michael Porter Jr., the nation’s top recruit, Missouri had no problems on opening night as it beat Iowa State 74-59 in a game the Cyclones never led. Porter Jr. started and had two points and two rebounds in two minutes played before coming out of the game because of a hip injury. Coach Cuonzo Martin said after the game that Porter Jr. told him his leg was bothering him so he took him out for precautionary reasons. Porter Jr.’s status remains unclear going into Monday’s game. Kevin Puryear had 17 points and eight rebounds in the first college game he didn’t start. Jordan Barnett chipped in 15 points and Kassius Robertson had 11 in his first game at point guard. Jeremiah Tilmon, who has battled foul trouble throughout the preseason, had 14 points and seven rebounds.

About Wagner (1-0): The Seahawks crashed NJIT’s welcome party for the Highlanders’ new arena with a 60-49 win. Wagner was picked third in the Northeast Conference preseason poll and was a few seconds away from making its second-straight conference tournament final last season. Head coach Bashir Mason returns for his sixth season and is one of the youngest coaches in Division I men’s basketball at age 33. Mason has had Wagner in the upper half of the NEC since taking over for Danny Hurley, who left for Rhode Island after two seasons in Staten Island. Blake Francis was the Seahawks’ leading scorer in its game against NJIT, scoring 22 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Senior JoJo Cooper is a reliable playmaker for Wagner and tallied a team-high six assists in the team’s win over the Highlanders.
