Missouri’s J’den Cox wins USA Wrestling’s top weekly honor

Missouri sophomore 197-pounder J’den Cox was chosen as USA Wrestling’s athlete of the week.

Cox, who is the reigning NCAA national champion at 197, went 3-0, including a pair of victories against top-10 opponents during the National Duals Final last weekend in Iowa City.

Cox, who is 30-0 on the season and ranked No. 1 at his weight, beat Illinois’ Jeffrey Koepke by major decision in the Tigers’ quarterfinal dual then topped 10th-ranked Elliott Riddick of Lehigh in the semifinals and sixth-ranked Nathan Burak of Iowa in the championship.

His performance helped No. 2 Missouri upset No. 1 Iowa in the championship dual at the Hawkeyes’ home gym, Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Cox has won 50 consecutive matches dating back to the last season, the longest current winning streak in NCAA Division I.

TheMat.com selects one USA Wrestling athlete of the week from all levels of wrestling, from youth programs through the senior level.
