Big 12 basketball success adds about $4.1 million to league’s NCAA Tournament revenue

When Big 12 teams continued their recent trend as falling victim to upsets in the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament, the league looked like it would leave money on the table.

But the runs of Oklahoma, Kansas and Iowa State rallied the league to a healthy take.

Revenue for postseason basketball is paid from the NCAA to conferences for the success of its teams. The more you win, the more you get. Teams receive a payment, or unit, of about $261,000 for making the field and one for each victory until reaching the Final Four.

The Big 12 was 9-7 in this year’s tournament before the Final Four. Oklahoma earned five units, Kansas four, Iowa State three and the Big 12 got one unit each from West Virginia, Texas, Baylor and Texas Tech. That adds up to about $4.1 million.

That amount is added to the previous five years of payouts, in the NCAA formula, and that check is written to the conference to be distributed among members.
