Tipoff times, TV channels and previews for Friday’s NCAA Sweet 16 games
MIDWEST REGION
At Chicago
▪ No. 1 Virginia vs. No. 4 Iowa State
6:10 p.m., CBS
Ultimate contrast in styles with Virginia playing one of the slowest tempos in college basketball and the Cyclones preferring to press the action. Iowa State averages 81.8 points, the Cavaliers surrender 59.6 points. But the Cavaliers can score — 54 in the second half against Butler. Guard Malcolm Brodgon had 22 against the Bulldogs. Georges Niang scored 28 in each of Iowa State’s victories.
Pick: Virginia 72-66
▪ No. 10 Syracuse vs. No. 11 Gonzaga
8:40 p.m., CBS
It’s the second meeting between the programs, with the first occurring in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Syracuse won by 22. The Orange pounded Dayton in the first round and ran away from Middle Tennessee State in second round. Gonzaga put away Seton Hall and pounded Utah in one of the tournament’s biggest eye-openers. Can Domantas Sabonis and Kyle Wiltjer have success against the Syracuse zone?
Pick: Syracuse 79-74
EAST REGION
At Philadelphia
▪ No. 6 Notre Dame vs. No. 7 Wisconsin
6:27 p.m., TBS
The battle of teams that survived heart-stoppers in the second round. The Irish got past Stephen F. Austin on a tip-in with 1.5 seconds remaining. The Badgers went even later, getting a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Bronson Koenig to upset second-seeded Xavier. Notre Dame has the nation’s seventh-most efficient offense and Wisconsin the 12th-most efficient defense and excels at limiting opponents’ three-point-shooting success.
Pick: Wisconsin 67-65
▪ No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 5 Indiana
8:57 p.m., TBS
The last time these teams met in Philadelphia, a national championship was at stake and President Reagan was shot. The president survived, and the Hoosiers won. When the Tar Heels are hitting threes they’re as good as any team in the nation. Indiana freshman big man Thomas Bryant scored 15 of his 19 points against Kentucky in the final 8 minutes. Now he faces the North Carolina’s formidable front line.
Pick: North Carolina 73-67
