Brian Hanni returns to Kansas as radio voice of the Jayhawks

The new radio voice of the Kansas Jayhawks is a familiar one.

Brian Hanni, who left Kansas four years ago to call men’s basketball and baseball at Texas Tech, returns to Lawrence to become the Jayhawks’ play-by-play voice for football and men’s basketball.

Hanni called Kansas baseball for more than a decade and for eight years was part of the broadcast team for KU women’s basketball before leaving for Lubbock.

He replaces Bob Davis, who had served as Kansas’ play-by-play voice since 1984.

“Naming a replacement for an institution like Bob Davis was a very difficult proposition,” Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger said in a statement. “We received interest from many well-established broadcasters. Ultimately we felt that Brian’s talent as a broadcaster, his positive outlook and his proven connection with the community separated him from the other outstanding candidates.”

Hanni, a Topeka native, graduated from Kansas in 2002.
