Offensive lineman from Texas commits to Kansas football team

The coded message appeared on Wednesday. Charlie Weis had landed another commitment in his 2015 recruiting class, so he logged onto his Twitter account and crafted a simple 10-word tweet:

“It’s a great day to be a Jayhawk! #itstime”

For Weis, it seems, there have been a number of great days lately. Or more precisely: There have been many tweets. Each time Weis has landed a commitment in recent months, he has commemorated with a vague celebratory message — a nod to the NCAA rules that prohibit coaches from commenting on recruits.

Such was the case Wednesday, after Aaron Garza, an offensive lineman from Sherman, Texas, called the Kansas staff and committed to the Jayhawks. Garza made it official Thursday, revealing his decision to reporters in Texas and to Rivals.com.

Garza, a three-star recruit who likely will play center, had previously committed to the Texas before Charlie Strong replaced Mack Brown during the offseason.

“I feel the same way about Kansas as I felt about Texas until the situation changed on me,” Garza told Rivals.com. “I think Kansas is a sure-footed program and can be turned around in the next five years.”

For a Kansas recruit, Garza’s other options may cause you to do a double-take. Before committing to KU, Garza had offers from a list of top schools, including Arizona State, Auburn, Baylor, Ole Miss and Oklahoma State. His other favorites were Ole Miss and Arizona State, according to Rivals.

Garza is the 12th commitment in KU’s 2015 class, which won’t be official until signing day in early 2015, and he is the fourth high school commitment from the state of Texas.
