KU recruit Josh Jackson helps West win McDonald’s All-American boys game
Some of the top high school basketball players in the country put on a show Wednesday night in the McDonald’s All-American Games.
Josh Jackson, a 6-foot-7 player at Prolific Prep in Napa, Calif., who is being recruited by Kansas, helped the West team take a 114-107 victory over the East in the boys game and was selected co-most valuable player along with Duke signee Frank Jackson. Both players scored 19 points.
Udoka Azubuike, who goes to Potters House Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla., and has committed to KU, had nine points and eight rebounds for the East squad.
Jayson Tatum of Chaminade College Prep in St. Louis had 18 points for the East.
▪ Sabrina Ionescu is going to make one college coach happy very soon.
Ionescu scored eight of her 25 points in overtime, helping the West rally to beat the East 97-88 in the girls’ game. Olathe South coach Steve Ingram was an assistant coach for the West team.
Ionescu, the only uncommitted player in the game, set a girls scoring record in the event while winning MVP honors. She tied it 88-88 on two free throws and then made back-to-back three-pointers that gave the West a 94-88 lead.
“I think it is a mindset you go into, and it is kind of hard to explain, but you do anything you can do to win, and if that’s hitting big shots then that’s hitting big shots, if that’s boxing out a play then it’s boxing out a player,” Ionescu said.
Ionescu is considering California, Oregon and Oregon State.
Amber Ramirez, who has committed to play at TCU, scored 21 for the East.
