Kansas’ Bill Self voted NABC national coach of the year
Kansas coach Bill Self was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Division I coach of the year, the organization announced Wednesday.
The NABC selects the winner based on a vote of member coaches. This is the first time Self has picked up the honor.
“All that means is you had a group of kids that cared an awful lot and played to a ridiculously high level all year long,” Self said. “Awards appear to be nice, but for me, a hundred times over, I would give any of that up to have those kids experience getting to play in Houston” at the Final Four.
Self will receive the award Sunday in Houston.
KU finished 33-5 under Self this season while winning the Big 12 regular-season title for a 12th straight season. After earning the NCAA Tournament's No. 1 overall seed, KU advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to second-seeded Villanova, 64-59, on Saturday.
