Kansas wing Kelly Oubre played just one game last week. It was enough to warrant Big 12 newcomer of the week honors on Monday morning.
Oubre, a 6-foot-7 freshman, earned the distinction after finishing with a career-high 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 96-69 victory over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon. Two days later, the 10th-ranked Jayhawks were in Philadelphia to face Temple on Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center.
For Oubre, it was a breakout performance after a modest start to his college career. He made nine of 15 shots from the floor, snatched five offensive rebounds and drilled four of his seven three-point attempts.
West Virginia’s Juwan Staten was selected Big 12 player of the week after being selected MVP of the Gotham Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York. Staten had a team-high 24 points and six assists in an 83-69 win over North Carolina State.
