What’s at stake

For Kansas and first-year coach David Beaty, the Jayhawks can change the vibe around the program with a victory Saturday. Even against a K-State team that has struggled to a 5-6 record, this would be a massive upset. For K-State, the prospect of a sixth straight bowl game looms. With a victory Saturday, the Wildcats would need only a home victory over West Virginia next week to finish 6-6.

Rustin Dodd’s pick: K-State 38-17

This is Kansas’ Super Bowl, and after 11 straight losses, it’s the Jayhawks’ last opportunity for a victory. On paper, it also might be their best chance to beat K-State since Bill Snyder returned from retirement. The problem? Bill Snyder is still coaching K-State.

Kellis Robinett’s pick: K-State 40-24

Three things about Kansas

1 The Jayhawks are one loss away from their first winless season since 1954, when the program finished 0-10. So far, that’s the only winless season in program history.

2 Kansas’ David Beaty is entering his first Sunflower Showdown as a head coach. Kansas’ first-year head coaches are 21-10 against K-State, but the last KU coach to beat K-State in his first try was Glen Mason in 1988.

3 Junior safety Fish Smithson, who leads the Jayhawks with 100 tackles, missed last week’s loss against West Virginia. If he is able to play Saturday, he just needs 14 tackles to tie KU defensive coordinator Clint Bowen for the third most by a defensive back in school history. Bowen had 114 tackles in 1993.

Three things about K-State

1 Kansas State has won 19 of the last 23 meetings in the Sunflower Showdown series and claimed the last three meetings in Lawrence.

2 The Wildcats feature 51 players from the state of Kansas on the roster, including 17 players who have made starts. Native Kansans make up 41.8 percent of the K-State roster.

3 The Cats are 41 of 44 in converting points in the red zone, with 29 touchdowns, including a 10-for-11 mark on touchdowns against Oklahoma State and TCU.

Key matchup

The K-State rushing attack vs. the KU defense: A week ago, the Kansas defense yielded 426 yards rushing in a 49-0 loss to West Virginia. If the Jayhawks can’t stop the Wildcats’ rushing attack, K-State should be able to keep things simple on offense.
