What’s at stake

This is Kansas’ best opportunity to snap its 33-game road losing skid, as well as a streak of 36 straight losses away from Lawrence. Next week, the Jayhawks will travel to TCU for their last road trip, and that appears to be a sure loss. If KU wants to avoid the ignominy of going six seasons without a road win, they must pull off an upset against a Texas squad that enters 3-5. The Longhorns, meanwhile, are trying to avoid a second embarrassing loss in successive weeks after falling 24-0 at Iowa State last week.

Cheers if ...

The Kansas offense scores more than 20 points. The Jayhawks are averaging just 16.5 points per game for the season and have scored just 11.4 points per game in Big 12 play.

Jeers if ...

The Jayhawks get blown out early. For the first time in a month, Kansas shouldn’t be totally overmatched.

Rustin Dodd’s pick: Texas 38-13

Texas should be motivated after last week’s dismal showing at Iowa State. The Kansas offense, meanwhile, has struggled to move the ball since a 30-20 loss to Texas Tech on Oct. 17.

Three things about Texas

1 The Longhorns haven’t lost to Kansas since the inception of the Big 12 — and they have never lost to the Jayhawks in Austin. In the last four games, Texas has outscored Kansas 122-30.

2 In his second season, head coach Charlie Strong is 9-12 overall at Texas and could risk missing a bowl game this season. Former Texas coach Mack Brown failed to make a bowl just once — in 2010 — in 16 seasons at Texas.

3 Redshirt freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard has replaced Tyrone Swoopes as the Longhorns’ starter. But Swoopes has remained involved in the offense, replacing Heard during short-yardage situations. Swoopes finished with three rushing touchdowns in a victory over K-State.

Key matchup

Texas’ offense vs. Kansas’ defense

OK, this is a big-picture matchup, but KU may finally be facing an offense it can contain. The Longhorns rank 122nd nationally in passing offense (134.4 yards per game) and are tied for 98th in scoring, averaging just 24 points per game. Last week, Texas couldn’t score on Iowa State. Can the KU defense keep the Jayhawks in the game?
