Jayhawks advance to Big 12 women’s soccer semifinals

Kansas will appear in its first Big 12 women’s soccer semifinal since 2008 when it meets Baylor on Friday at Swope Soccer Village.

The 8 p.m. contest will follow the other semifinal, matching West Virginia and Texas Tech. That game begins at 5:30 p.m.

The sixth-seeded Jayhawks, 9-8-2, defeated Texas 2-1 in the semifinals. Kansas got a goal from Ashley Williams off a pass from Tayler Estrada in the fourth minute, and Jackie Georgoulis knocked in a goal deflected off the post in the 73rd minute. Third-seeded Texas answered two minutes later but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Second-seeded Baylor outlasted TCU 7-6 in penalty kicks after extra time left the game 1-1. Kansas defeated the Bears 1-0 during the regular season.

In other quarterfinals, regular-season champion West Virginia edged eighth-seeded Oklahoma State 2-1. The Mountaineers are ranked second nationally. Texas Tech beat Oklahoma 2-1 with a goal in the 99th minute.

The championship game is Sunday at 3 p.m. and will be televised by Fox Sports 1.
