First quarter

Key play: The Sooners sprinted to their first score on a Baker Mayfield 68-yard touchdown throw to Joe Dixon, who was coming out of the backfield. Dixon was wide open on the play and ran past the Jayhawks for an easy score.

Key stat: Mayfield had 173 yards passing. He only had one incompletion and threw for three touchdowns in the quarter.

Second quarter

Key play: Ryan Willis provided the lone highlight for Kansas in the first half. Willis hit Tyler Patrick on a 17-yard out route and Patrick walked in for the score. At the time it was 21-7, which meant the Jayhawks were still in the game.

Key stat: Oklahoma receiver Sterling Shepard put up 174 yards in the first half. Shepard continues to show why he is one of the best route runners and receivers in the league.

Third quarter

Key play: KU’s Dorance Armstrong sacked Trevor Knight, preventing another touchdown. Armstrong had two sacks.

Key stat: The Sooners scored 21 points in the third quarter and opened up their lead against the Jayhawks.

Fourth quarter

Key play: Sooners QB Knight connected with his twin brother, Connor Knight, on a 17-yard TD pass.

Key stat: KU’s offensive line gave up five sacks against a stout Oklahoma front.

The grades

Offense

D

With no rhythm by the Kansas offense, it was hard to judge the Jayhawks. They made some nice plays, but nothing to sustain drives. Another freshman, Tyler Patrick, emerged as a potential target for Ryan Willis. Still there was not enough consistency to show productivity. There will have to be some changes this week to the game plan.

Defense

D

The Jayhawks could not slow down the Sooners’ offense. Baker Mayfield combined with Samaje Perine made for a nice balance. Kansas could not stop Oklahoma from doing anything. The defense will have to go back to the drawing board just like the offense.

Special teams

C

The Jayhawks recovered a fumble on a punt return by the Sooners. They also had a decent day of punting by Matt Wyman, who is still transitioning from kicker to punter. Nothing spectacular, but they did not hurt themselves.

Coaching

D

After going into halftime 38-7, David Beaty and his staff were unable to change the tide of the game. The coaches will have to take a long look at the tape this week and find ways for the offense and the defense to be more productive. The offense especially will have to find a way to put up more than seven points if it wants to be competitive.

Takeaways

Player of the game: Sterling Shepard is the real deal. He can run many different routes, which helps quarterback Baker Mayfield when he gets into trouble. Shepard gave the KU secondary fits. Look for him to be a force the rest of the season.

Reason to hope: There are many young players getting experience for KU. The Jayhawks started six freshman on offense and have a lot of youth on defense. That could be beneficial next year and in some matchups later this season.

Reason to mope: The Jayhawks cannot seem to get anything going on offense. If Kansas can’t score any points, then it will struggle against its final opponents in the Big 12, especially TCU. Beaty has to find something that the offense can draw up to move forward as a unit.

Looking ahead: Kansas goes on the road to Texas next weekend. The Jayhawks will try to break a 33-game road losing streak when they travel to Austin.
