Kansas wide receiver Tre’ Parmalee didn’t reach the end zone Saturday, but he managed a solid outing all the same.

Parmalee, a senior who went to Bishop Miege, caught six passes for 115 yards in a 58-10 loss to Oklahoma State.

“He’s a mature guy, he really is,” Kansas head coach David Beaty said. “He’s been around for a while, and he’s a coach’s son, and I say that a lot because I think it matters. Just a quality kid.

“His performance, it might get buried a little bit, but I thought he played pretty good. He did a pretty good job of blocking for us. And I think on the sideline, it was really impressive to watch Tre’ handle his teammates and make sure those guys continue to play and fight.”

Silver lining

Kansas quarterback Ryan Willis passed for 191 yards and a touchdown, but he only completed 12 of his 31 attempts. Beaty, though, liked what he saw out of his freshman signal caller.

“Biggest positive I will take out of this game is the way that young man handled today,” Beaty said. “As he would come off the field, we used every single moment as a teachable moment. He’s a freshman, obviously, and there’s a lot of things to learn in a hostile territory like today, particularly against a front as good as they were.”

Tragedy in Stillwater

The game was an afterthought because of a tragic incident that occurred at Oklahoma State’s homecoming parade on Saturday morning. A motorist hit a large collection of paradegoers, killing at least three and wounding at least 40 more.

“I heard about right when we got on the bus to come here,” Beaty said. “I think it was fairly early that I found out about it.”

There was a brief discussion about whether to play the game, and Beaty said his players never stopped preparing for the contest.

“Our players, I don’t think, they even knew there was even an option,” Beaty said.
