Quiet day for KU men’s basketball while women sign four
It was an uneventful fall signing day for Kansas coach Bill Self, who has yet to land anyone in his 2015 class. The Jayhawks, who have 11 scholarship players this season, have two open scholarships for 2015-16 and could have more if any players were to leave early for the NBA Draft.
The Jayhawks are still chasing a handful of top-20 recruits, including 7-0 center Stephen Zimmerman of Las Vegas, Nev., and 6-9 forward Carlton Bragg of Cleveland. In the backcourt, the Jayhawks have heavily pursued Malik Newman of Jackson, Miss., a 6-foot-3 guard rated as the No. 3 overall player in the country. All three will likely wait until the spring to decide.
KU women’s hoops
The Kansas women signed four players Wednesday, including Leavenworth star Tyler Johnson and Olathe South standout Kylee Kopatich.
KU coach Bonnie Henrickson also signed guard Aisia Robertson of Richmond, Calif., and guard Jayde Christopher of Federal Way, Wash.
Johnson, a 6-2 forward from Leavenworth, earned first-team All-Metro honors while leading the Pioneers to the Class 5A state title last season. Kopatich, a 5-foot-10 guard, is the reigning Sunflower League player of the year. The Jayhawks’ class was rated as the 19th best in the country by ESPN’s Hoopgurlz rankings.
“I am more impressed by the competitiveness and basketball IQ of this group,” Henrickson said, “than I am with how they are ranked.”
