What’s at stake
In plain terms: This could be Kansas’ best chance for a Big 12 victory. The Jayhawks have lost 31 straight true road games, but the Cyclones are projected to finish ninth in the Big 12. According to the advanced numbers at ESPN’s Football Power Index, the Jayhawks have a 9.9 percent chance to score an upset in Ames. Yes, it’s remote. Last year, the Jayhawks handled Iowa State 34-14 in Lawrence. But that was with quarterback Michael Cummings at the controls, and Kansas has lost its last three games at Iowa State’s Jack Trice Stadium.
Cheers if …
The Kansas rushing attack gets back on track. After beginning his college career with consecutive 100-yard games, junior Ke’aun Kinner was bottled up for 23 yards in 15 carries in a loss at Rutgers. One thing that would help: The KU passing attack has to stretch the field to keep defenses honest.
Jeers if …
Quarterback Montell Cozart completes fewer than 50 percent of his passes. After a suboptimal performance in a loss to Memphis, Cozart battled through illness, came off the bench and was effective against Rutgers, completing 13 of 18 passes for 193 yards.
Three things about Iowa State
1 It feels as though quarterback Sam B. Richardson has been around forever. Three years ago as a freshman, Richardson torched KU’s defense, hitting on 23 of 27 passes for 250 yards at Memorial Stadium. Now a senior, Richardson is completing a career-high 61 percent of his passes.
2 Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads remains on the hot seat. After going to three bowl games in four years, Iowa State is just 6-21 since 2013. A 1-2 start and a road loss to Toledo hasn’t helped.
3 Kansas coach David Beaty recruited Iowa State receiver Allen Lazard to Texas A&M. Lazard, who is listed at 6 feet 5 and 223 pounds, leads Iowa State with 15 catches for 150 yards.
Key matchup
Kansas’ passing attack vs. Iowa State: The Kansas passing attack has shown signs of life. Quarterback Montell Cozart looked more efficient against Rutgers, and freshman receiver Tyler Patrick continues to be a nice surprise. But if the Jayhawks want to upset Iowa State, they will need more productivity in the air. Offensive coordinator Rob Likens says he’s gaining confidence in Cozart, and the Jayhawks could utilize true freshman quarterback Ryan Willis in certain packages.

Rustin Dodd’s pick: Iowa State 35-24
In two games against Football Bowl Subdivision teams, Kansas is averaging just 18.5 points per game. Stating the obvious: That won’t cut it in the Big 12 — even against Iowa State.
