Charlie Weis adjusts Kansas football coaching staff

In a rebuilding Kansas football program with many holes, few have been as troubling as the ongoing lack of production at the wide receiver position.

Charlie Weis is hoping he can fix the problem.

Weis, entering his third year at Kansas, announced Monday morning that he was taking over as the Jayhawks’ receivers coach, replacing Rob Ianello, who will move to an off-field role. The official change comes nearly two months after Weis hired former Rice offensive coordinator John Reagan to take over the KU offense, effectively ending Weis’ own two-year stint in the role.

Weis also said Monday that running backs coach Reggie Mitchell would take over for Ianello as recruiting coordinator. Ianello will move into a created position with the title: director of research.

For now, KU will move forward with eight assistant coaches, one less than you are allowed, and there is no indication if Weis will fill the spot.

“I have decided to adjust our staff,” Weis said in a statement. “Reggie Mitchell will return to a position he is very familiar with as our recruiting coordinator. Rob Ianello will move to an off-field position as director of research, spending most of his time on recruiting. Coach Reagan and I discussed several alternatives and have decided to have me handle the wide receiver position at this time.”

Reagan will also serve as KU’s offensive line coach. A former KU assistant under Mark Mangino, Reagan replaced Tim Grunhard, the former Chiefs lineman who worked as KU’s offensive line coach during Weis’ first two years.

Ianello was a former assistant and recruiting coordinator under Weis at Notre Dame before serving as the head coach at Akron from 2010-11.

“Coach Weis and I discussed our approach moving forward,” Reagan said. “I decided, and we have agreed, that the best immediate answer is to have Coach Weis handle the wide receiver position.”
