KU football gets commitment from Texas defensive tackle D.J. Williams

Kansas coach Charlie Weis is spending most of this week on the road, making one last recruiting effort as signing day approaches on Feb. 5.

On Thursday, he landed a big one.

D.J. Williams, a three-star defensive tackle from Lufkin High School in Texas, picked Kansas over offers from Oklahoma, Missouri, Houston, Miami and others, according to Rivals. Williams, 6 feet 3 and 270 pounds, is rated as the 75th-best prospect in Texas, according to Rivals.

“I chose Kansas because I felt they showed the most interest,” Williams told Rivals.com. “I really like the school and my visit. I think I can go in and play and make a strong contribution if I work hard.”

KU now has 18 members in its 2014 class.

Earlier this week, Josh Ehambe, a two-star linebacker from Arlington, Texas, made a verbal commitment to KU. Ehambe also had offers from Washington State, Colorado State, SMU, Louisiana Tech and others. And last weekend, KU landed two other players: Derrick Neal, a three-star receiver/defensive back, and junior college defensive end Kapil Fletcher of Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif.

Neal, a senior at Lincoln High School, was previously committed to Texas Tech before deciding to play college basketball at Texas-Arlington with his brother. Fletcher, 6-4 and 255 pounds, had offers from Colorado, Hawaii and Mississippi State, among others.

Also Thursday, Weis announced that former Florida tight end Kent Taylor had signed a grant in aid to attend KU. Taylor, who sat out the 2013 season, said in December that he would transfer and play for the Jayhawks.

Taylor was the top-ranked tight end prospect by Rivals in 2012 and played in six games as a freshman for the Gators.
