Kansas women fall to Texas on the road

Imani McGee-Stafford ruled the paint Wednesday at the Frank Erwin Special Events Center, scoring 24 points and hauling in 10 rebounds as Texas defeated Kansas 70-58 in Big 12 play.

The Longhorns methodically built a 12-point halftime lead to lead 39-27 at the intermission. Texas extended its lead to 17 points with 16 minutes, 37 seconds left before the Jayhawks went on a 14-4 run to chop the lead to 52-45. But the Longhorns righted themselves and kept Kansas at bay for the rest of the game.

Forward Chelsea Gardner led Kansas in scoring with 11 points. She and Jada Brown, who had 10, were the only Jayhawks in double figures.

Both Texas and Kansas got a significant chunck of their scoring from their benches. The Jayhawk reserves chipped in 27 points, while the Longhorn substitutes tossed in 30.

Kansas shot better from the field — 46.2 percent, compared with Texas’ 42.4 percent — but the Longhorns put up 14 more shots (28 of 66) than the Jayhawks (24 of 52).
