KU’s Wayne Selden picked Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week

One day after being honored as Big 12 newcomer of the week, Kansas freshman Wayne Selden added another distinction Tuesday.

Selden was selected the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week after averaging 22 points in the Jayhawks’ first two Big 12 games. The honor, awarded by the United States Basketball Writers Association, was for games ending the week of Jan. 12. Selden was selected by a one-person panel consisting of CBS Sports.com’s Jeff Borzello.

Kansas State freshman guard Marcus Foster took home the award the previous week.

After struggling to find a rhythm in the nonconference part of the schedule, Selden broke out with a career-high 24 points in Kansas’ road victory over Oklahoma last Wednesday. He followed that with 20 points in the Jayhawks’ 86-60 win against K-State on Saturday.

Selden also averaged 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists while also knocking down eight of 15 shots from three-point range. He had made just 12 three-pointers in KU’s 13 nonconference games.

“Over time we were getting better with it,” Selden said after the K-State victory. “We’re just getting more comfortable with it, and we’re just coming together.”
