Atticus Richmond, 6-foot-8, 230-pound freshman-to-be from the Newman School in Boston, has decided to play basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks.

A forward, Richmond made the announcement Saturday on his Instagram account.

Originally from Frankfort, Illinois, Richmond averaged 8.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game this past season.

He had committed to Columbia University in July of 2025, choosing the Ivy League school over Lehigh.

According to 247sports.com, Richmond shot 66%% from inside the arc and 29% from 3-point range this past season. His season high in points was 16 and his season high in rebounds was 11.

Richmond also played for the Illinois Wolves 17-and-under AAU team.

He made a campus visit to KU on Thursday and Friday.

Newman School plays in the Massachusetts Bay Independent League. The school’s website says: “The only boarding school in Boston, Newman provides opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to pursue serious studies in a welcoming and supportive environment where self and community are paramount.”

The Newman School won the New England Basketball League title this past season. Richmond had nine points and six rebounds in the title game.

Prior to heading to the Boston school, he played at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

“Atticus Richmond has been an outstanding glue guy for Newman School. The inside/out forward who can post smaller defenders is a great cutter and can shoot it from 3,” wrote Rodger Bohn of Slam Magazine and ballislife.com.

Here’s a look at KU’s roster for the 2026-27 season. Head coach Bill Self has two returnees from last year’s team, in Kohl Rosario and Paul Mbiya.

The Jayhawks’ incoming freshmen are: Tyran Stokes, Taylen Kinney, Davion Adkins, Luke Barnett, Trent Perry, Grant Mordini and Richmond. Players signed from the transfer portal are Dennis Parker Jr. (Radford), Keanu Dawes (Utah), Leroy Blyden Jr. (Toledo) and Christian Reeves (College of Charleston). Reeves will be out until mid-summer following shoulder surgery.

Will Thengvall is grandfathered in as a walk-on. A new rule has otherwise eliminated walk-ons. All 15 players on a roster receive scholarships; players with remaining eligibility, such as Thengvall, can remain walk-ons.

KU has two remaining scholarships to give.

“I’m very happy with our portal class, happy with the recruitment of these guys,” Self told The Star on Friday in a phone interview. “We tried to recruit for needs. We did address needs, and I think this class will allow us to play at the highest level nationally to go with the highest-rated recruit nationally.”
