Kansas redshirt freshman men’s basketball guard Corbin Allen — a two-time winner of the DiRenna Award which goes to the top high school player in the Kansas City area — has heard from coaches from eight schools since his name officially appeared in the NCAA transfer portal at 9 a.m. Friday.
The list of teams showing early interest in the 6-foot-5, 175-pound graduate of Oak Park High School include North Dakota State, Appalachian State, Belmont, East Tennessee State, Sam Houston, San Diego, Lindenwood and Georgia Southern.
As he told The Star on Friday, his recruitment “is 100% open” with his list likely to grow in coming days/weeks.
“Yes I did,” Allen said, asked by The Star if he “learned a lot” practicing with the KU team but not playing in games during the 2025-26 campaign.
“Playing with the best and learning from the best all year, I am a better player now than I was going into KU. The experience at KU was very nice. I loved being close to home and having support all around me. Lawrence is a special place. I loved all the fans, coaches, teammates and being in the environment of Kansas basketball,” Allen added.
Allen said he simply was “looking for a better opportunity for me to get on the court.”
Allen, who as a senior helped Oak Park High claim the Missouri Class 6 state title, did get to play in one exhibition game as a Jayhawk.
He went 0 for 4 shooting while grabbing two rebounds while playing two minutes in the Jayhawks’ 71-35 victory over Fort Hays State on Oct. 28 at Allen Fieldhouse.
Allen signed a financial aid agreement with KU on May 20, 2025. That’s after he decommitted from San Diego.
He redshirted the 2025-26 season and has four years of eligibility remaining.
Allen was a three-time first-team all-state pick in high school. He was the first player in Oak Park High School history to surpass 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career.
Coached by former KU guard Sherron Collins, Oak Park went 31-1 during Allen’s senior season. Allen averaged 16.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game in 2024-25.
As a junior at Oak Park, Allen averaged 17.5 points, 8.0 rebounds 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. In 2023-24, Collins’ first season as Oak Park head coach, the Northmen posted a 27-5 record and advanced to the Missouri Class 6 State Tournament semifinals.
Allen last season told kuathletics.com he chose KU “because it’s one of the best basketball schools in the world. It’s close to home, and it’s a good opportunity for me to compete against the best talent and learn from the best coaches.”
He said he enjoyed “the atmosphere of the games (in Allen Fieldhouse).”
He said his favorite KU player of all time was Devonté Graham. Ochai Agbaji was “in my top three for sure.”
Agbaji also graduated from Oak Park High.
The transfer portal officially opened April 7. The portal will close on Tuesday. Players don’t have to commit to a new school by the April 21 deadline. They only need to submit their name through their compliance office by that date.
Other KU players who have decided to transfer via the portal: Bryson Tiller (Missouri), Elmarko Jackson (Georgetown), Jamari McDowell (Wake Forest), Samis Calderon (Butler) and Flory Bidunga (Louisville). Senior Jayden Dawson said he’d entered his name in the portal while planning on filing for a fifth year of eligibility because of injury woes his freshman year at Loyola Chicago.
Freshman Paul Mbiya recently told The Star he’d decided to enter his name in the portal, but has not yet entered. On Tuesday, he told The Star he was undecided about a return to KU for a second season.
Kohl Rosario has said he will return to KU for a sophomore season. Darryn Peterson has completed his one-and-done season at KU.
KU has a recruiting class of incoming freshmen Taylen Kinney, Davion Adkins, Luke Barnett and Trent Perry. The No. 1 player in the class of 2026, Tyran Stokes, has an official list of KU, Kentucky and Oregon. KU has added one player from the portal thus far in former Utah forward Keanu Dawes.
