Jamari McDowell becomes fifth Kansas basketball player to enter transfer portal
Kansas guard Jamari McDowell will enter the transfer portal, he announced on social media Tuesday morning.
The redshirt sophomore has two seasons of eligibility remaining. McDowell averaged 3.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists while shooting 34.9% on 3-pointers this past season.
That said, he had several notable performances, including 10 points in a win over then-No. 1 Arizona and eight points with six assists in a win vs. No. 2 Iowa State.
“I want to start by thanking the University of Kansas, my coaches, teammates, staff, and the best fans in college basketball,” McDowell wrote in an Instagram post. “Wearing Kansas across my chest has been an honor I’ll carry with me forever. The support, energy, and love I’ve felt in Allen Fieldhouse is something I’ll never forget.
“You all helped shape me both on and off the court. After careful thought and prayer, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal to continue my journey. Thank you for everything.”
McDowell is the fifth KU player to enter the transfer portal and fourth in the last two days. McDowell was one of the first players off the bench for KU this past season and played in every single game.
While he shot well from deep, McDowell struggled to shoot overall, making just 36% of his looks from the field. The former four-star recruit was the longest-tenured Jayhawk player alongside guard Elmarko Jackson (who has also entered the portal).
Coming out of high school, the Houston native picked KU over Xavier, Texas A&M, Wake Forest and others.
The other Jayhawks in the portal are Jackson, Flory Bidunga, Bryson Tiller and Paul Mbiya.
