Renderings have finally arrived for Phase II of the University of Kansas’ ongoing renovations to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.
KU Athletics released pictures and details about second phase of the so-called Gateway project at and around the 100-year-old football stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The second phase of the massive refresh focuses on the eastern and southern part of the stadium, plus the full district just east of the stadium. That area will include a hotel, restaurants, office space, student housing and more.
The Gateway District is set to be fully complete in 2028, with construction happening during the offseason periods that follow the 2026 and 2027 KU football seasons.
Meanwhile, the Jayhawks will play six home games with reduced capacity at “The Booth” this coming season. The stadium’s lower seating on the east side will be open and utilized this fall, requiring temporary concessions and restrooms. According to KU, the remaining upper bowl and rebuilt concourses will be completed prior to the 2027 season.
The expectation is that the Jayhawks will be back to full capacity at the stadium, which originally opened in 1921, in time for the 2027 season.
Construction on Phase II started in December.
“We are thrilled with the new west and north sides of The Booth and, in earnest, have begun the transformation of the east and south sides in advance of the construction of the mixed-use development that will create the Gateway District for the University of Kansas,” KU athletic director Travis Goff said in a news release.
“Our fans have stepped-up in support of this project via game-changing donations and the purchase of season tickets. As we head into year two, it is vital that we continue that trajectory to ensure the completion of The Booth and the continued build of Kansas Football.”
According to the news release, construction for a new surface parking lot, located at the corner of 11th and Missouri streets, will be complete before the start of the 2026 season.
KU will play host to six home games at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium next season: Long Island (Sept. 4), Missouri (Sept. 12), Middle Tennessee State (Oct. 3), Baylor (Oct. 24), UCF (Nov. 7) and BYU (Nov. 21).
