Kansas Jayhawks quarterback David McComb — a potential candidate to be head coach Lance Leipold’s starter under center in 2026 — will enter the transfer portal.
The Edmond, Oklahoma native made the announcement Friday via social media.
“Grateful for every moment as a Jayhawk. Excited to see what God has in store!” McComb wrote on X.
McComb, whose departure was first reported by ON3, has four years of eligibility remaining. He becomes the 11th KU player to enter the transfer portal since the season came to an end.
His exit deals a blow to KU’s quarterback situation as Leipold searches for a successor to Jalon Daniels. McComb, a redshirt freshman, was expected to compete with Cole Ballard and Isaiah Marshall for the starting job this coming spring.
Daniels has exhausted his college eligibility and it remains unclear who will fill the all-important role in 2026. Earlier this month, Leipold said the program didn’t plan to add a quarterback from the transfer portal.
That’s likely to change with the departure of McComb.
McComb had numerous fans on and around the team, including his teammates. A three-star recruit coming out of Memorial High School in Edmond, he was considered a true dual-threat QB and selected KU over Virginia Tech, Memphis and other suitors.
McComb wasn’t on KU’s depth chart this past season, but he served as a valuable scout-team quarterback. Ahead of the Jayhawks’ game against Cincinnati, for instance, he mimicked Bearcats QB Brendan Sorsby.
“David has done a really good job for us,” KU defensive coordinator D.K. McDonald said then. “He’s playing scout team QB, but it’s really just him being who he is. He’s an athletic guy. That’s really fun.”
