KU Jayhawks’ Darryn Peterson returns vs. Mizzou, as new issue limits his minutes
He’s back.
Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson returned to action vs. Missouri on Sunday. The freshman had missed seven games due to a hamstring strain.
Peterson played despite dealing with an illness. He scored 17 points in the Jayhawks’ 80-60 rout of Mizzou in Kansas City.
“I felt Tuesday, after the Connecticut game, that I was pretty confident that Darryn would be able to go. He’s done great, but he needed to get a couple, three more days underneath him,” KU coach Bill Self said pregame. “On Friday night, he comes down with this bug that everybody is getting. At least it’s run through our team and guys missed practice and had the upset stomach and flu-type symptoms even though it’s not the flu.
“That’s the only thing that’s holding him up. We knew he was going to play, but could he play being sick? He feels better today. So hopefully he will be out there to go, but it may limit his minutes a little bit.”
Speaking before the game, Self further explained what to expect from Peterson.
“I don’t know (that) there’s a minutes restrictions, but he can’t play 40 minutes,” Self said. “I wouldn’t do that to him with his hamstring, but I also wouldn’t do it to him with him not feeling well. I imagine we are going to have to rest him a little bit more than usual because he doesn’t feel great.”
The freshman guard returned to practice last week. In seven games without him, Kansas went 5-2.
The last time Peterson played before Sunday was Nov. 7 against UNC. He logged 23 minutes of action against Mizzou, including six in the second half.
Overall, Peterson had played two college games before Sunday. He dealt with what KU called a “cramping issue” before the season. That limited him in the second half against Louisville in the preseason and kept him out of KU’s exhibition against Fort Hays State.
Self shared a longer update on Peterson after the game.
