The Kansas students seated in both the north and south lower-level bleachers of Allen Fieldhouse chanted, ‘(Bleep) Dan Hurley,’ several times in the first half of UConn’s 61-56 men’s basketball victory over the Jayhawks on Tuesday night.
KU coach Bill Self, after noticing the obscene chanting directed at the Huskies’ coach, was seen from his seat on the bench uttering the words, “Knock it off,” to the students in the north-side seating.
The public address announcer shortly after Self’s request reminded fans to follow the Big 12 policy on sportsmanship and cease and desist the chant.
“I wasn’t expecting that (chant). Everyone was so nice to me the last time I was here,” Hurley said, smiling, after the game.
His Huskies lost to the Jayhawks during the 2023-24 nonconference season in Allen.
“I don’t really have an opinion. If that’s how people want to carry themselves in a game … it’s sports. We’re all (bleeping) gladiators,” Hurley added.
KU coach Self, in his postgame media session, was asked if he heard the chants of the students.
“Yes. I verbally said, ‘Knock it off,’’’ Self said. “Because you don’t do that. But the atmosphere was great. Students were great. It was a big-time atmosphere. That was fun to be a part of that from an atmosphere standpoint.”
