  • Dawson injured right wrist during warmups; coach Self calls him doubtful for tourney.
  • Tre White sustained cut on nose, played second half; staff ruled out concussion.
  • Point guard Darryn Peterson remains sidelined; KU to test status upon return to Lawrence.

Already missing freshman phenom Darryn Peterson at the guard position, Kansas basketball will likely be without senior Jayden Dawson the final two games of the Players Era tournament in Las Vegas, coach Bill Self said after Monday’s 71-61 victory over Notre Dame.

Dawson headed to the locker room in pain holding his right wrist with 12:17 left in the first half. He returned to the MGM Grand Garden Arena bench area wearing a brace, but did not enter the game again, failing to register any stats in his four-minute stint.

“Apparently he hurt it dunking in warmups — his right wrist,” Self said in the interview room after the game, noting that X-rays were “pending.”

“So I bet he’s doubtful for the tournament,” Self continued. “But I do not know that for a fact, but he went in today and then obviously said he couldn’t go. So that was disappointing because we’re kind of shorthanded right now to begin with.”

Dawson, a senior transfer from Loyola Chicago, entered the tourney averaging 5.2 points in 18.6 minutes per game.

Senior guard Tre White, who scored 16 points with nine rebounds in 34 minutes, played the second half with a bandage on his nose.

He was hit in the face by Notre Dane’s Kebba Njie with 39 seconds left in the first half.

He did play the final half and shouldn’t miss any time, Self said.

“I was never concerned. The one thing that I was probably thinking about (was), ‘I hope it’s not a concussion,’ so that would have been the one thing,” Self said. “But anybody who has been hit on the bridge of their nose knows it bleeds, and his really did.”

Self offered an injury report concerning Peterson, who has missed four straight games and will not play in the final two games of this tourney.

“I’m hopeful soon,” Self said of a return date. “He’s doing more every day. He’s working out here. He’s running. He’s cutting. He’s doing some things that … he’s just got to test out of some things, which we’ll test him again when we get back (to KU after the tourney). Week to week may be too long. It’s more of an every three or four days (to check on availability). We’ll reevaluate and see where he’s at.”
