  • Sayon Keita began his KU visit as part of a busy U.S. recruiting tour this week.
  • Keita impressed scouts at the NBPA Top 100 Camp and NBA Academy Games in 2024.
  • Keita will meet with Indiana, Kentucky, Duke, UNC and UConn by week's end.

Sayon Keita, a top international prospect in the recruiting class of 2027 (but who is considering switching to the class of ’26), was on the Kansas Jayhawks’ campus Monday for an official visit.

According to sources close to the situation, Keita, a 7-foot-0, 17-year-old center from FC Barcelona of Spanish Liga ACB and EuroLeague, had breakfast with a quick-healing KU basketball coach Bill Self and other Jayhawks coaches at a downtown Lawrence restaurant. The recruit also toured the KU facilities and spent time on campus during the course of the day.

Self had two stents inserted in a heart procedure Thursday and was released from the hospital Saturday.

Keita, meanwhile, is a native of Bamako, Mali. He exploded onto the recruiting scene by playing well at the recent NBPA Top 100 camp in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Keita is scheduled to visit several college basketball programs this week, lending some recruiting analysts to speculate he may soon reveal a decision about his future hoops home. He has not said if he’d play in Spain again during the 2025-26 school year, or perhaps remain in the U.S..

According to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express. Jacob Polacheck of Kentucky Sports Radio and Travis Branham of 247Sports, Keita will visit Indiana on Tuesday, Kentucky on Wednesday, Duke on Thursday, North Carolina on Friday and UConn on Saturday.

“Keita is an elite defender that possesses great size, incredible length and is a very fluid mover on the court. He covers immense ground on the defensive end of the court, providing a premier anchor to his team’s defensive efforts,” wrote Branham of 247Sports.

“Playing both at the NBPA Top 100 Camp and the NBA Academy Games this summer, Keita showcased his ability to block and alter shots at an elite level. Offensively, Keita is still a bit raw but has shown flashes of ability to score with his back to the basket with a right hook and has high upside as a vertical spacer to go up and grab lobs,” Branham added.

Keita averaged 13.2 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game at the Academy Games in July.

Branham added: “At the NBA Academy Games, he was the main attraction and continued to look like he has a case for the top big in the class. He is a game-changing defender who can anchor a defense with his mobility, length, and rim protection. He shows some flashes of upside to be a play-finisher and scorer on the block, but the defense he provides is glaring, with loads of potential to still tap into as he gets stronger and continues to develop. Keita is currently unranked, but looks like he has a real case to be a five-star international recruit.”
