Former Kansas Jayhawks basketball forward and 13-year NBA veteran Marcus Morris was arrested on a fraud charge Sunday in Broward County, Florida, TMZ.com reported.

According to Broward County sheriffs office booking records, Morris, 35, was arrested at a Florida airport on a felony charge of fraud — writing a check with insufficient funds. According to the Daily Mail, Morris was taken into custody at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The booking report said Morris was on an “out of state hold,” meaning he was being held Sunday without bond, with the alleged infraction committed in a state other than Florida.

Morris’ agent, Yony Noy, took to social media site X Sunday night to comment on the arrest and say there was “zero fraud.”

“Just so everyone understands this is zero fraud here or whatever crap outlets have said regarding fake checks or whatever the hell,” Noy wrote on X. “This is due to an outstanding marker with a casino. Apparently if you have over $1,200 they can issue a warrant for your arrest. Absolute insanity!” the agent wrote.

The Daily Mail wrote Sunday that a source indicated the casino in question is in Las Vegas. The Daily Mail reported that in the state of Nevada, an unpaid marker is treated the same as writing a bad check.

“Failing to pay a marker is treated as a class D felony and carries a penalty of fines and up to four years in prison,” the Daily Mail stated.

Marcus’ brother, former KU and NBA forward Markieff Morris, wrote on X that this matter may be cleared up soon.

“The wording is crazy. Damn for that amount of money they’ll embarrass you in the airport with your family. They got y’all really thinking bro did some fraud (bleep). They could have came to the crib for all that. When y’all hear the real story on this (bleep) man. All I can say is Lesson learned. Bro will tell y’all tomorrow. This weird (bleep) gave me a headache. Can’t stop nothin!” Markieff Morris wrote.

Marcus Morris, the No. 14 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, did not play last season but has not officially announced his retirement from the NBA. He did some analysis during the 2024-25 season on various ESPN telecasts including the show “First Take.”

Morris has played for Houston, Phoenix, Detroit, Boston, New York, the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia and Cleveland in his career. He averaged 12 points and 4.4 rebounds in 832 games in his career. He averaged 17.2 points and 7.6 rebounds a game in 2010-11, his third and final year at KU.
