David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is one step closer to being ready for the KU Jayhawks’ zero week football game against Fresno State.
The turf is now in place, as unveiled on Wednesday. The KU football program showed off the new artificial playing surface on its X social media account.
The turf was by far the most extensive piece of renovation left to complete during phase one of the venue’s rebuild.
“Here we are getting into mid-July, it’s like, ‘Hey, we’ve got to have the turf down, but we could play a game here,’” KU athletic director Travis Goff said earlier this month. “It’s really special. I can’t wait for our fans to experience it. I’m sure there’s going to be some kinks and stumbles to that opening, but I think that’s part of the fun.”
According to Goff, phase one of renovations will be complete by KU’s looming Aug. 23 showdown vs. Fresno State. The first phase focused on rebuilding the west, southwest and north sides of the stadium.
Some of the other improvements include a new conference center, elevated seating, closer premium seating and a new scoreboard.
The east side of the stadium will be completed during phase two of the project, which is scheduled to begin after the conclusion of KU’s 2025 football season.
The Kansas football team plans to hold a couple of practices in the renovated stadium before the start of the season in August.
“We have identified at least a couple of dates where our team can practice,” Goff said, “so they can experience the new lights and they can be on the new turf. Obviously, break that turf in a little bit.
“Two, three weeks into August, we expect a ton of activity for it to be a pretty functional venue, for the most part.”
