KU basketball lands first transfer portal commitment from Loyola Chicago guard

The Kansas men’s basketball team landed its first transfer portal pickup Friday.

Loyola Chicago guard Jayden Dawson has committed to the Jayhawks, a source confirmed to The Star. Dawson later announced the news on his Instagram.

Kansas now has seven open roster spots.

The second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection led the Ramblers to the NIT semifinals and entered the transfer portal Wednesday.

Dawson averaged 13.9 points and 3.1 rebounds last season. He also shot 36.3% on 3-pointers on high volume (7.4 attempts per game). He just finished his junior year of college — his second as a starter — with one year of eligibility remaining.

Notably, Dawson scored 35 points in an NIT second-round win over San Francisco. That marked a career high, and he did it without committing a turnover in 34 minutes.

He scored 20 points in six different games last year.

Listed at 6-4, 195 pounds, Dawson was originally a 3-star recruit from Omaha. He picked Loyola Chicago over Drake, Wyoming and others.

The Jayhawks have lost six players to the portal so far in this recruiting cycle, though two of those players indicated they would not rule out a return.

The Star’s Gary Bedore contributed to this report.
