A number of Jayhawks earned Big 12 honors, but Kansas coach Bill Self wanted one more

Kansas Jayhawks center Hunter Dickinson has made the All-Big 12 First Team in men’s basketball, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.

The Jayhawks big man’s inclusion on the 10-player first team marks the second straight season he’s garnered the honor. Dickinson averaged 17.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game during the 2024-25 season.

A couple of other KU players also earned postseason conference honors.

Kansas guard Zeke Mayo was a third-team all-conference selection and made the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. A transfer from South Dakota State and Lawrence native, he averaged 14 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3 assists this season.

Finally, KU guard Dajaun Harris earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention for the third consecutive season. He averaged 9.1 points and 5.7 assists per game this year.

KU has now had 38 All-Big 12 First Team selections over the 29 years of the Big 12’s existence. The Jayhawks also lead the Big 12 with an all-time 162 player garnering All-Big 12 honors. Baylor is second with 123.

KU coach Bill Self had just one grievance with this year’s list of Big 12 postseason accolades: the snub of forward KJ Adams.

“I’d say I thought KJ deserved at least an honorable mention deal,” Self said. “All that honorable mention is is just one coach in your league has to vote and it can’t be me, but one coach in the league has to vote for somebody for the third team, if I’m not mistaken. You’ve just got to get one vote somewhere.

“So I’m disappointed in that, because obviously to me he is (worthy of mention). But when you really look at it, you’ve got 10 guys on the first team and just five on the second, third team, if I’m not mistaken.

“And then you’ve got 10 or so, or 12, on honorable mention, and I don’t think anybody in our league that’s a coach that’s coached against KJ wouldn’t feel like he’s one of the best 32 players in our league. That would be the biggest disappointment to me. But everything else was pretty much true to form.”

The Jayhawks start postseason play in the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. No. 6-seeded KU plays the winner of a Tuesday UCF/Utah matchup in Round 2 of the tourney.
