When will the KU Jayhawks men’s basketball team return to Kansas from Florida?
The University of Kansas men’s basketball’s players, coaches and support staff had no problems traveling from Lawrence to Orlando, site of Sunday’s Big 12 Conference game against UCF.
The Jayhawks’ charter bus left Lawrence for the Topeka airport and a scheduled charter flight to Florida at about 11 a.m. on Saturday, several hours before ice and snow and wind across Kansas made travel impossible.
KU made it to Florida in plenty of time for a Saturday night shootaround at Addition Financial Arena.
Returning from Orlando, however, where the Jayhawks pummeled the Knights 99-48 Sunday afternoon, has proven to be more challenging.
The KU team, which will begin preparations for Wednesday’s 8 p.m. home game against Arizona State as soon as possible, was forced to remain in Florida on Sunday night because of continued brutal weather in Kansas and Missouri. Original plan was to fly charter back to Topeka right after Sunday’s game.
Estimated time of arrival in Topeka on Monday, barring any further weather delays, should be during the early afternoon hours.
“We’ve been told we should be able to leave tomorrow at 11 (a.m.),” coach Bill Self said after the Jayhawks improved to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 Conference action.
“We’ll stay here tonight. We go from what is it, 65 degrees today, sunny, the breeze 3 miles per hour out of the south or southeast or whatever it is, to a balmy minus-10 below zero windchill. I wouldn’t mind staying here a couple more days,” added Self, “but unfortunately we’ve got a game on Wednesday.”
Arizona State like KU is 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Sun Devils slugged Colorado, 81-61, on Saturday in Tempe, Arizona. BYU beat ASU in the league opener, 76-56, on Dec. 31 in Provo, Utah.
