Kansas Jayhawks bring back Nevada offensive coordinator Matt Lubick. Here’s his role

Nevada offensive coordinator Matt Lubick is rejoining the Kansas football staff as co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, the Jayhawks announced Tuesday.

The news comes just a few days after the promotion of Jim Zebrowski to offensive coordinator. The news was first reported by The Athletic and confirmed by the Jayhawks Tuesday afternoon.

“We’re very excited to welcome Matt back to Kansas,” coach Lance Leipold said in a news release. “In his time here, he made valuable contributions to our program and our offensive evolution. Matt is an extremely accomplished coach and will be a great addition to our staff. He is a very dedicated to his craft, and I think he and Coach Zebrowski will work very well together in their roles.”

Lubick was previously a senior analyst with the Jayhawks for two seasons (2022-23). Alongside former offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and current OC Zebrowski, Lubick was credited with helping make the Jayhawks’ offense prolific in back-to-back bowl seasons.

Kansas went from ranking 104th in yards per play to fifth (7.0) and from 91st to fifth in passing efficiency in 2022. The Jayhawks ranked No. 21 in points scored despite playing three different quarterbacks in the 2023 season.

He also helped coach the Jayhawks while undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia.

“I could not be more excited for the opportunity to return to Kansas. Coach Leipold and his staff embraced me as family when I became an analyst in 2022,” Lubick said. “I am beyond grateful for their continued support and love they have given me throughout my recovery of leukemia. The turnaround of Kansas football has been awesome to follow and the best is yet to come. Rock Chalk.”

While Nevada went just 3-10 this season, Lubick did help the team in a couple key areas. Prior to his arrival, Nevada ranked 130th nationally in red-zone touchdown percentage. That ranking rose to No. 8 in 2024.

Lubick had a notable coaching career before arriving in Lawrence in 2022. He was the OC at Oregon (2016), Co-OC at Washington (2017-18) and again the OC at Nebraska (2020-21).

The KU Athletics news release noted that in 2012, Lubick “was named Football Scoop’s national Receivers Coach of the Year, as well as being one of three finalists for the American Football Coaches Association’s (AFCA) National Assistant Coach of the Year.”
